Power to serve innovation

Upgrading an information system to deploy new applications and implement new technologies, while preserving the legacy applications and smoothly integrating the open systems world with the mainframe environment. These are the main issues faced by IT managers today.

Bull DPS 9000 mainframes are used as large servers by major companies and organisations and handle millions of transactions and hundreds of batch jobs, day after day. Their processors are among the most powerful available and they use Bull's Twin Architecture to combine the advantages of mainframes with those of open systems. Mainframe applications can be integrated into the new e-business applications and cooperate with Unix®, Windows® or Linux® applications, while enjoying the power, reliability and security of the GCOS 8 system.

The Bull DPS 9000/TA300 range, strengthens its GCOS 8 offering in the following areas:

  • More power, to meet the constantly growing needs of batch and transactional processing, amplified by the development of e-business.
  • More standards, to allow integration of technological innovations with GCOS 8 functionalities, via inter-application dialogue and data sharing.
  • Mainframe type quality guarantee for both hardware and software.

Designed by Bull as part of the Olympus 2B project, the Bull DPS 9000/TA300 range is the latest and most powerful embodiment of the Twin Architecture concept: processing, input/output and telecommunications power, plus interoperability and database access.

The answer to power and openness needs

By clearly orienting the Bull DPS 9000/TA300 range to the open world, Bull states its firm commitment to its customers: to protect the portfolio of their GCOS 8 applications while offering still more power and openness, with the reliability and robustness that characterise mainframes, allied with constantly falling costs of acquisition and ownership. This commitment will continue for the coming ten years and further, through the Helios project (Bull NovaScale 9000), which will offer a GCOS 8 environment on a platform containing the most powerful Intel® processors.

A performance boost for all applications

The new Bull DPS 9000/TA300 range of processors, based on 0.09 µ CMOS technology and designed by Bull, offers:

  • 33% more processing power than the previous generation (Bull DPS 9000/TA200).
  • Input-output rate 50% higher.
  • Direct access to Oracle databases.
  • A dedicated processor for e-business applications.
  • Higher-performance telecommunications processors.
  • Addressable memory of 16 GB.

All GCOS 8 applications thus benefit from higher performance, from batch to transactional or e-business applications.

Opening up to the world of new technologies and standards

To communicate with the open world, Bull DPS 9000/TA300 systems have new dedicated processors:

  • To offer GCOS 8 applications the highest-performance storage solutions on the market:
    SAN (Storage Area Network) and Fibre Channel network storage.
  • To enable GCOS 8 applications to access Oracle databases transparently, with enhanced performance.
  • To manage communications and integrate new e-business applications into GCOS 8 applications which want to communicate with the Internet world - native high-performance TCP/IP connections - high-speed secure access to Bull JOnAS and BEA WebLogic applications servers and Java components.

Investment protection

With the new version of the GCOS 8 SR5.2 software, GCOS 8 applications take full advantage of the benefits of the Bull DPS 9000/TA300 systems. Transition from the former version to the new version of GCOS 8 is smooth and simple for both the GCOS 8 applications and the IT teams, which helps protect legacy applications, while incorporating the various technological advances, at no extra cost.

The Twin Architecture integrates various dedicated processors to enable GCOS 8 applications to access the open world

Input/Output Server Processor (IOSP)
These processors offer enhanced connectivity and performance, allowing a reduction in the batch window, leading to a greater safety margin and greater transactional usability.
These processors are built around Unix systems with PCI bus. They manage up to 4 Fibre channels, giving input/output connection rates 50% higher than the previous "A2" models. The availability of Fibre channels as standard and of the associated switches is the first step in integrating GCOS 8 into the SAN (Storage Area Network) system.
The existing IOSP processors can be reconnected to the Bull DPS 9000/TA300 to support ESCON and Fibre channels.

Database Server Processor (DBSP & RAPID)
This processor and the corresponding software enable the GCOS 8 world to integrate Oracle DBMS native functionalities. Apart from the data traditionally attached to GCOS 8 (UFAS, IDS/II, RFM/II), GCOS 8 applications can access and update Oracle data with a very high level of integrity and performance.
RAPID, together with the DBSP processor, provides access to native Oracle data for IDS/II based applications, without modification of source programs.

GCOS Network Server Processor (GNSP)
This processor is a technological development of the FCP 8 processor designed to support TCP/IP as standard. It is ten times faster, can handle five times as many concurrent users, and the number of transactions per second and the number of access ports have been quadrupled. Unlike FCP 8, it offers telecommunications sharing. In addition, the TNVIP Server, G&R GGATE and G&R GWEB terminal emulators are directly integrated into the GNSP.

e-business Server Processor (e-BSP)
This processor uses the same technology as the GNSP processor. It is a high-performance, secure link ensuring cooperation between the new e-business transactional applications and the GCOS 8 production applications and data. It thus offers the best of both worlds:
- TP8, for the data server resident on GCOS 8,
- The Bull JOnAS or BEA WebLogic applications server executing Java components (EJB).
